Exodus 18:5-26
Moses had experienced needing help
to keep his arms raised while Joshua
and others fought the Amalekites,
but it took him a little longer to see
a similar need in other ministries.
Sometimes we ministers take our role so
seriously that we think it all rides on us!
Moses was not going to last long
if he continued to try to handle everyone's
problems. He needed to learn
about multiplied ministry and delegation.
Moses’s father-in-law brought Moses’s
family to join him. He saw that
the task of leading so many people
and solving all their problems was
way too much for one man to handle.
He advised Moses to enlist faithful
dedicated men to handle all the
smaller matters, saving Moses for
only the bigger, more serious disputes.
If two heads are better than one, then
several heads are better than two!
Even Jesus called and trained disciples and
eventually turned the whole ministry over
to them when He went back to heaven.
We are never alone because of Jesus,
but we don't need to try to handle
all of his ministry without human help either!
Prayer: Father, help us to see the wisdom
in enlisting help and delegating.
We are a body and a body needs
all of its parts functioning!
P.S. At the time of this writing, I was
planning to take a month-long sabbatical.
I had taken one about ten years
before and it was very much needed
to keep me going in the ministry.
This time, just like then, I would
need others to fill in for me –
preaching, teaching, checking on others,
handling the day-to-day ministries
of the church. Knowing that there
are others who are ready, willing, and able
to carry on in my place makes the sabbatical work!
